SCRIPT:
Assalamu’alaikum Wr.Wb.
Honorable juries, teachers, committees and all the participants. It is a great honor for me to join this English speech contest.
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
In the name of Allah, the most Merciful and the most Gracious.
All praises be to Allah SWT, the lord of the world, the master of the day after, the creator of everything in this universe.
Peace and Salutation be upon our prophet Muhammad SAW, who has brought us from the darkness into the brightness and guided us into the right way of life.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
In this good opportunity, I would like to give a speech on the life story of our beloved prophet: Muhammad SAW (peace be upon him).
Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca in 571 A.D. The name of his father was Abdullah and the name of his mother was Aminah. Muhammad was born after the death of his father. His mother also died when he was only six years old. After the death of his mother, Muhammad was brought up by his grand-father Abdul Muttalib and later on, by his uncle Abu Thalib. From the very childhood Muhammad was serious minded and very often used to think about everything which he saw around him.
As a young boy of thirteen years, he joined his uncle in his business. During his trade-journeys he curiously watched the various customs of the different Arab societies. At the age of twenty-five years he was employed by a rich widow Khadijah for looking after her business. She was so impressed with the noble character of Muhammad that she subsequently married him. Prophet lived with her till she died. After her death the Prophet married other women who were also widows except the fourth one (Ayesha Begum) who was daughter of his friend and disciple Abu Bakar from Khadijah, the Prophet had two sons and four daughters. But, only the fourth daughter Fatima survived him. From other wives there were no children.
Prophet Muhammad thought seriously about the evils in the society and was anxious to find out ways and means to remove them. He used to go to a lonely cave in the mountain called Hira’ where he thought about the concept of God, religion and the reform of the society. It is believed that once, in the month of Ramadhan in 609 A.D., when the Prophet was meditating in the cave, he heard a strange voice.
The voice was from Angle Gabriel who was sent to him by God. Gabriel whispered in the ears of the Prophet: “Read in the name of Allah, the Creator of all things, who made man from a clot of blood. Read for thy Lord is most gracious, he who teaches the use of pen teaches man what he does not know”.
This was the first ‘message of God’ (Wahi) to the Prophet. Since then, a series of divine communications or messages of God were received by him on different occasions till his death. Quran is a collection of all such divine messages revealed to the Prophet from time to time. In short, the basic principles of the religion which were preached by the Prophet are as under:
(i) God (Allah) is one and only one, and that Muhammad is His messenger (Rasool).
(ii) God (Allah) is the Supreme Commander of everything that exists in this World and that everyone should “submit to the will of God”. As pointed out earlier, the Arabic word Islam means “submission to the will of God”.
(iii) All human beings are equal. No one is to be treated as superior to another because they are like brothers.
Through his preaching, the Prophet laid down also the new principles of life and abolished the existing evil customs from the society. First to believe and obey these divine messages was Prophet’s wife Khadijah.
Gradually others also believed in what he said. But a great majority of people in Mecca opposed these preachings. They did not allow the Prophet to speak and communicate the message to the people. Finding it difficult, the Prophet left Mecca and went to Medina in 622 A.D. This journey from Mecca to Medina is taken to be a ‘holy mission’ (Hejarat). At Medina his preaching’s were appreciated and more and more people became followers of the Prophet…

The postponement of 2013 National exam for senior high schools (the 12th-grade students) in 11 provinces has become a hot topic for the last two weeks. The first day of the national exam was scheduled for Monday, April 15, but it was pushed back until April 22. Day two of the exam was administered on April 23, while the third and fourth days of the test were still given on Thursday and Friday, April 18-19. The number of students in the 11 provinces were 1.1 million in 3,601 high schools and 1,508 vocational schools.
Regarding the delay of the national exam, many said that it was caused by the poor-prepared management in Ministry of Education and Culture. As an annual program in Indonesia’s education system, national exam should have been organized well and properly. Some experts also stated that because of the fiasco, the result of the national exam, therefore, could not become a valid evaluation.
~
Here are some comments from our society concerning on the postponement of 2013 national exam (quoted from The Jakarta Post, paper edition):
- As the national exam is an annual activity organized by the Education and Culture Ministry, it can be prepared for as early as possible. It is very difficult to understand why the implementation of this year’s exam was so chaotic. I think it was caused by poor management within the central committee, so the minister should be responsible for its implementation. In an era where all activities can be supported by advanced technology, 11 provinces had to delay the exams due to the failure in the distribution of exam materials. The quality of education reflects the progress of the nation. Therefore, the ministry needs to thoroughly assess its failure. (Bambang Utomo, Jakarta).
- Although the national exam is a routine, annual occurrence, this year it failed to be realized in 11 provinces. Exam material did not arrive on time, which forced the government to postpone the exams in those 11 provinces. Even after the postponement, not all schools — especially in remote areas — received the necessary exam material. In the meantime, other provinces have finished the exams, so the exam material is no longer a secret. It would be better to declare all pupils in those 11 provinces who missed the exams scheduled for last Monday, to have passed the test. They will then be free to compete with other students in their effort to get a job or to continue their studies. (Soebagjo Soetadji, Jakarta)
- To save the students, the government could declare this a national emergency and allow schools to conduct their own exams. (Subur, Semarang)
- As a teacher, I know that the preparation for the first distribution of 20 packages of exam materials should be well prepared by professional officials. The government should not force the schools to do something disgraceful. (Hasanah, Purwakarta, West Java)
- It is the fault of Education and Culture Minister Muhammad Nuh. He should have estimated the time it would have taken for local residents to receive the materials. Lessons should be learned from this to avoid such problems in the future. (Moon Munawaroh)
- Conditions in the Education and Culture Ministry are shown with this incident. But no one will take responsibility and no open investigation will be carried out. It is an accident, so be it! (Eddy Arjuna Zainy)
- The Corruption Eradication Commission should immediately focus on this particular case, as there is an unmistakable indication of corruption here. Why is the quality of the answering sheets substandard? Students have difficulty erasing a wrong answer and, as a result, get even more stressed as they might fail their exam because of such imperfections in the paper? The Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (FITRA) has already alleged that irregularities occurred during the tender for the printing and distribution of materials for the national exams. This should be investigated immediately. From his past actions and decisions, Nuh has already demonstrated he is totally unfit for the job, but is adept at setting back the general education level for our Indonesian youngsters about a hundred years. The extent of Nuh’s lack of ability and failure to grasp the enormity of the effects of his blunders is shown in his powerlessness to realize the extent of the harm he has done. He can only play the blame game and offer lame excuses. If the President really has the best interests of our present and future generations of children at heart, he should fire this champion of incompetence. (Tami Koestomo)
- Education and Culture Minister Muhammad Nuh has to step down. (Dien Muhan)
- When the NASA Challenger 13 exploded they investigated the causes were to avoid the same thing happening again. I hope the same thing happens for this exam fiasco. (E Nurdin, Jakarta).

Warm regards,

Free Ebook Download: a collection of folktales as a reading material for building students’ English vocabulary. Genre: narratives. Grade: intended to use for Indonesian students, Junior and Senior high school students (SMP/SMA). Files: e-book, pdf. Upload by soehaarrr_ @ soehaarrr.com, April 2013.
This collection contains 30 folktales that can be used as resources for English teachers in teaching reading comprehension, particularly regarding text types or genres. The folktales in this book may also become reading exercises for the students of SMP/SMA to prepare for National Exam (Ujian Nasional) since there is one of the stories appearing in the past national exam (Qui Jun and the Arrogant Monk, page 53).
Here is one of the folktales in the collection (page 48):
THE EAGLE AND THE ARROW
Eagle was a strange creature. He got his fun out of teasing and frightening the little birds. Even when he was not hungry, he would soar through the sky and swoop down on some unsuspecting birds and pretend to prey on them. The poor little birds would cower with fear and try to fly away.
Eagle would then burst into an ear-piercing laugh and flap his wings disdainfully. “I am the King of the sky! How scared you all are of me,” he would exclaim.
The birds did not like Eagle and they all thought he was very mean, for the other eagles swooped down on the smaller birds only when they were hungry.
Once it so happened that a flock of pigeons was flying in the sky and Eagle decided to scare them. He came swooping down on them from out of the blue. The pigeons shrieked and scattered in different directions.
Just then Eagle’s sharp ears caught a whizzing sound. He turned around and saw its source: an arrow! Sure that the arrow was not meant for him but for the pigeons, Eagle just turned away. But the pigeons had flown out of the way!
“Swick!” The arrow struck Eagle right in the heart and he started fluttering to the ground. “Oh no, I don’t want to die,” said Eagle, “I have so many years more to live…” But he was losing his blood very fast. He fell to the ground with a thud and with dying eyes looked at the killer arrow.
It was decorated with one of his own feathers! “Oh God, no!” said Eagle, as he died.
